about

Better work is possible

At PKG Safety Innovation™, we believe safety is an outcome of well-designed work. When work is thoughtfully planned, intelligently executed, and genuinely designed around the people who do it — safety follows.

Better work means people feel engaged and trusted. Capable of doing their job well, with systems that genuinely help. It means the gap between “work as imagined” and “work as done” gets smaller over time.

That’s what we’re working toward. Better Work, By Design™.

The Pocketknife Group®

Pocketknife Group® is a collective of practices dedicated to designing better work in high-risk industries. Founded by Cam Stevens, the group brings together consulting, education, and media under one philosophy: that better health, safety, and wellbeing are outcomes of well-designed work.

PKG Safety Innovation™

Our consulting practice. Advisory services for organisations navigating digital safety transformation, critical risk management, and the integration of AI and emerging technology into safety-critical systems.

Safety Innovation Academy™

Our education practice. Coaching, learning, and capability-building for safety leaders, their teams, and technology vendors serving the safety market.

SafetyTech™ News

An independent editorial collective focused on cutting through noise in the oversaturated EHS technology market as a trusted, authoritative source for safety tech intelligence.

Together, these practices create an ecosystem — research informs consulting, consulting informs education, education builds capability across the industry. Better Work, By Design™.

Why “Pocketknife”?

The pocketknife is an incredible piece of design. Compact, versatile, always ready. Go to any workshop, any worksite where people do real high-risk work — you’ll find someone with a multi-tool on their belt. It’s the symbol of preparation. Of being able to handle whatever comes up.

Pocketknife Group® is named for that philosophy. We’re generalists by design, because complex problems don’t fit neatly into specialist categories. We bring together expertise in safety, technology, human factors, data, and change management — different tools for different situations, all in one place. And when we need deep specialist capability, we hire and engage the right people to complement our core team.

There’s also a tongue-in-cheek element. In many high-risk workplaces, pocketknives are banned. Too dangerous. Can’t trust people with them. We think that says something about how the safety profession sometimes treats the people it’s meant to protect. We’d rather build trust than build barriers.

The Safety Innovation Framework™

We follow a philosophy: understand before you act, plan before you build, and deliver with the rigour the work deserves. The Safety Innovation Framework™ is how we bring this to life.

Discovery

Every engagement starts here. We help you understand your current state — the systems, the tools, the data quality, the relationships — and your capacity for change. Our Safety Innovation Discovery™ process is informed by market intelligence and benchmarking, so you see yourself in full context.

Visioning & Roadmapping

Good strategy requires knowing where you’re headed. We help you co-design a vision that’s ambitious enough to inspire and concrete enough to guide decisions. This becomes the foundation for your roadmap — informing pace, investment, and the amount of disruption your organisation can handle.

Delivery

This is where most safety transformation efforts fall apart. We bring proper governance, project discipline, and change management — in an advisory capacity that ensures your initiatives actually land. We stay with you through execution.

Continuous Improvement

Better work is an ongoing direction. We build learning, iteration, and adaptation into everything we do.

Throughout every phase: education, engagement, capability-building, and knowledge transfer. We’re here to build your team’s ability to sustain and extend the work independently.

What we stand for

Honesty

We tell you what you need to hear—even when it’s uncomfortable. We admit when we don’t know and when things didn’t work.

Rigour

We do it the right way. We stand by our work. The work has to be sound — researched properly, tested, built to hold up.

Courage

We challenge what isn’t working and celebrate what is. Innovation requires being willing to feel uncomfortable.

Contribution

Beyond our work on fatality prevention, mental health and wellbeing, we also contribute to environmental projects and industry participation.

Senior expertise, directly engaged

PKG is deliberately small. We select the right people for every engagement — and the people you meet are the people who do the work.

Cam Stevens — Founder & CEO

Chartered safety professional and technologist. Background in physiotherapy and human factors. 200+ technology deployments across high-risk industries. The trusted voice for SafetyTech™ and digital safety transformation.

Plus a network of specialist collaborators we bring in as needed — in data, research, training, and domain-specific expertise.

Trees for Every Project™

Regenerative contribution

Each year, PKG contributes to Regenerate Australia to support native tree planting and landscape restoration. It’s a practical way to ensure our work has a regenerative dimension.

Every project we complete contributes to something growing in Australian soil.
